Social Issue

The current Novel I have read was The Secret Life of Bees, By Sue Monk Kidd. In this novel the present social issue is racism. "I've just never heard of a Negro Lawyer, that's all." (Kidd 120) The term Negro was a word used to discriminate against  'black people', that indicated racism. Racism is significant to the novel because it encounters events that only occurred to happened because of racists. For example the Civil Writes Movement affected one of the characters Rosaleen which allowed her to vote. This event caused three racist white men to attack Rosaleen and Rosaleen was the one who suffered from the crime the white men did. "Rosaleeen got thrown in jail," (Kidd 232) which was the outcome to this situation, and therefore caused a complication for the main character Lily who wanted to run away with Rosaleen to freedom.

Significance of..

The two significant elements from the book I am reading, Elixir by Hillary Duff, are the camera, and the event of the fire. The camera is a significant element because the element guides the plot to the main problem. The camera took the photos at the fire, and within those photos there was a discovered shadow of a man in each one. The man's shadow created a curiosity in the plot, for the main character. "I ran my eyes over the backgrounds, the corners, the most seemingly inconsequential parts of each photo, enlarging and enlarging until every time.. I saw him" (Duff 50).  The Fire event is a significant element because it gives the reason to take the photos. Without the fire there wouldn't be an event for a camera to be used. Therefore there would not be a plot for the story. She states at the fire, "I had absolutely no idea I was taking pictures that would change my life forever" (Duff 29).
